SpaceAM, a Gloucestershire-based aerospace and defence technology company, has closed a Seed funding round backed by Foresight Group, a regional private equity and real assets manager, together with UK Government funding. The financial terms of the Seed round were not disclosed.

Founded in 2019 by Christopher Isaac, the company develops ultra-lightweight autonomous sensing systems for deployment in contested and extreme environments. It describes a nature-inspired flight design that allows small sensor payloads to slow their descent without parachutes or propulsion, with onboard processing converting sensor readings into usable information in real time.

What the funding will support

SpaceAM said the capital will fund development of its product range, strengthen governance and prepare the business for a Series A round. Isaac said the investment provides not only capital but the structure and governance required to scale, and signals preparation for a Series A.

The technology was originally developed for space exploration and is now also applied in defence and security, where demand for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capability has grown. The company reports recent contracts with the UK Ministry of Defence and the European Space Agency, and £2 million in UK Government defence funding. It was selected as one of thirteen companies supported under a government scheme intended to grow future British defence technology businesses, has expanded its team to 13 people, and has established new research and development facilities in Gloucestershire.

Rubina Singh, investment director at Foresight Group, said the company has developed a differentiated sovereign autonomous sensing platform addressing needs across defence and security markets, and has translated technical work into contract wins at an early stage.

Why it matters for private capital

UK defence technology has moved from a restricted corner of the venture market to an area of active allocation, supported by government co-investment schemes and rising procurement budgets. Early-stage companies in the segment typically show contract-led revenue, long qualification cycles and concentration in a small number of public-sector customers. The undisclosed round size here is itself characteristic of the sector, where disclosure practice is often shaped by customer and security considerations rather than investor preference.
